Stress & Anxiety

Are you feeling stressed, anxious or rundown? Are you always on the go? In todays modern society our lives can get pretty hectic! Whether you’re a working or stay at home mum, a single career person, studying, or leading a busy work/ social life it is easy to forget to take some downtime and allow your adrenals to take a break.

Do you know about the sympathetic nervous system (your fight or flight response) and how constantly overstimulating the Adrenal Glands can have a massive impact on your health?

When your sympathetic nervous system is engaged, it stimulates the adrenals to secrete stress hormones such as Cortisol and Adrenaline, which is great to get you out of a threatening situation, but not on a daily basis. The opposite of the Sympathetic Nervous System is the Parasympathetic Nervous System (your rest, digest, and repair response), and the balance of these two systems is paramount in maintaining homeostasis within the body.

Long term elevated stress hormones can lead to a multitude of health issues including diabetes, heart disease, irregular menstrual cycles, increased menopausal symptoms, gut disfunction, impaired immune system, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

At Kishi Acupuncture, we assess the whole system at the beginning of each acupuncture session, checking for over engagement of the sympathetic nervous systems via the pulse, and the hara (Japanese diagnostic technique using stomach palpation). After a thorough systemic assessment, advanced Japanese acupuncture techniques are administered to assist in downregulating the sympathetic nervous system, repairing the functionality of the Adrenal Glands and harmonising the sympathetic / parasympathetic balance. Studies show this may have a significant effect on stress and anxiety, blood pressure, the immune system, and the endocrine system via the Hypothalamic- Pituitary- Adrenal Axis (which is discussed under the fertility and women’s health tabs).

Please feel free to contact Dr Tahnee Burchmann if you would like to know more or have any questions about acupuncture for stress and anxiety.
